The people of Anchorage, Alaska are the ones who said no to hate with their historic defeat of Proposition 1. The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund is honored we were able to aide this victory for transgender rights.

(Washington, DC) – In a victory for transgender people’s rights, voters rejected a repeal to Anchorage, Alaska’s non-discrimination law protecting transgender people. Anchorage is now the first municipality in the country to uphold transgender protections on a standalone ballot measure.

“Thank you to the voters in Anchorage who voted for equality over discrimination,” said Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund. “This vote gives us all hope that we will continue to stem the tide of hateful measures rolling across the country. We applaud the Anchorage voters for choosing equality and justice for all people.”

The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund financially supported the Fair Alaska coalition campaign efforts and activated members to help get out the vote. The next struggle for equality is in Massachusetts, where anti-LGBTQ efforts are underway to undermine anti-discrimination law.

“We believe that progress, justice, and equality are voters’ values,” said Carey. “This year, we are seeing stepped up efforts to achieve those aspirations, and the Task Force Action Fund will be there.”

The National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund builds political power, takes action, and creates change to achieve freedom and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people and their families. The Task Force Action Fund works toward a society that values and respects the diversity of human expression and identity and achieves equity for all.

At a time when the Trump administration and the religious right wing are doubling down on attacks on transgender youth, workers, and service members, the Anchorage win shows that a growing majority of Americans and people of faith nationwide are rejecting discrimination against transgender people. Following the outcry against North Carolina’s HB2, several anti-transgender efforts have been defeated nationwide over the last year—including legislation in Texas and two failed attempts to put anti-transgender discrimination on the ballot in Washington State. Meanwhile last month, a Republican-controlled New Hampshire House passed comprehensive non-discrimination protections for transgender people.
